COMPETITORS: High school students who love computers and biology or who are interested in engineering and medical field or who enjoys challenging problems. High school GIDAS members.

GENERAL CONTEST FORMAT:
Session 1: Multiple choice test (50% of the total score toward All round scholar, UTR, Intron awards)
Session 2: Computational research (50% of the total score toward All round scholar, UTR, Intron awards)

Session 3: Kahoot game for a group competition (separate winners)

 

ADVANCED CONTEST FORMAT (Next-gen sequencing questions included):
Session 1: Multiple choice test (40% of the total score toward All round scholar, UTR, Intron awards)
Session 2: Computational research (60% of the total score toward All round scholar, UTR, Intron awards)

Session 3: Kahoot game for a group competition (separate winners)

 

FOOD: Snacks will be provided!

 

PURPOSE: To familiarize students with functional genomics, help them understand diseases in terms of genes and environmental networks, and participate in computational biology research.

 

AWARD: There will be cash prizes for the contest winners and raffle winners. Award ceremony follows the competition and talent show.

 

POTENTIAL ONLINE PARTICIPANTS: need to sign up two week before (if approved, separate instruction will be sent out)

 

PARENTS: are welcome to attend any of the events (see parent sessions for more information).

For those who do not feel prepared for this contest:

Participation will broaden your perspective on the emerging field of medical genomics. You become familiar with key elements of genomics and learn how to access freely available resources which can lead to cures. In short, the contest itself is a learning opportunity.

 

Do you have talent to show? Share your talent with others while we are summing up results.

 

While you participate, enjoy snacks.

 

You may even win a prize! (either contest or raffle)

 

Program

1:30 – 2:00 pm Arrival and Check-in (Room 1230)
2:00 – 2:10 pm Contest introduction
2:10 – 2:40 pm Multiple choice test (Room 1230 and 1250)
2:40 – 3:00 pm

Break, snacks, and contestants without computers move to the computer lab (Room 2234),

others at Room 1230 and 1250

3:00 – 3:30 pm Computational research on genomics and depression (guided tasks using computers)
3:30 – 3:45 pm Snack break
3:45 – 4:25 pm

Group trivia game (you can register with your group member names or your group will be randomly assigned)

4:25 – 4:45 pm Talent show featuring schools and individuals  |  Parents enjoy the show
4:45 – 5:00 pm Award ceremony including a raffle
