COMPETITORS: High school GIDAS members. Other high school students are also welcome with advanced registration.

 

DATE: Saturday, February 13, 2016

 

TIME: 2 – 5 pm

 

LOCATION: University of Michigan, Room 1230 on the Plaza Level (main floor) of the Undergraduate Science Building

 

REGISTRATION is required. You will receive confirmation for the registration. Due Date: Feb 11, 2016

 

BRING: Laptop (if you don’t have a laptop, please tell us that you need a computer when register)

1) Genomics

2) Lung Cancer (Disease of focus in 2015-16 school year)

 

STUDY MATERIALS are available.

 

GENERAL CONTEST FORMAT
Session 1: Multiple choice test (40% of the total score)
Session 2: Kahoot game for a group competition (20%)
Session 3: Computational research (40%)

 

ADVANCED RESEARCH CONTEST FORMAT (New this year)
Session 1: Multiple choice test (25% of the total score)
Session 2: Kahoot game for a group competition (25%)
Session 3: Computational research (50%)  For this session, advanced problems will be given.

 

SNACK: Provided

 

PURPOSE: To familiarize students with functional genomics, help them understand diseases in terms of genes and environmental networks, and participate in computational biology research.

 

AWARD: Cash prizes for the contest winners and raffle winners. Award ceremony follows the competition and talent show.

 

PARENTS are welcome to attend any of the events (see parent sessions for more information).

For those who do not feel prepared for this contest:

Participation will broaden your perspective on the emerging field of medical genomics. You become familiar with key elements of genomics and learn how to access freely available resources which can lead to cures. In short, the contest itself is a learning opportunity.

 

Do you have talent to show? Share your talent with others while we are summing up results.

 

While you participate, enjoy snacks.

Program

1:30 – 2:00 pm Arrival and Check-in (Room 1230)
2:00 – 2:10 pm Contest introduction
2:10 – 2:40 pm Multiple choice test (Room 1230 and 1250)
2:40 – 3:20 pm Group trivia game (you can register with your group member names or your group will be randomly assigned)

| Parents can observe or participate as a team

3:20 – 3:40 pm Break, snacks, and contestants without computers move to the computer lab (Room 2234),

others at Room 1230 and 1250

3:40 – 4:10 pm Computational research on genomics and lung cancer (guided tasks using computers)
4:10 – 4:15 pm Gather in Room 1230
4:15 – 4:45 pm Talent show featuring schools and individuals  |  Parents enjoy the show
4:45 – 5:00 pm Award ceremony including a raffle
