High school students are fundraising for Lung Cancer research.

Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the US. AN estimated 158,040 Americans are expected to die from lung cancer in 2015. Lung cancer accounts for almost 27 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking has been studied for decades and has been linked to many diseases and cancers, including lung cancer. The risk of developing lung cancer is about 23 times higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers and smoking is associated with an increased risk of at least 15 types of cancers and causes millions of deaths worldwide. However, smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer, as the common stereotype expects. Almost 20% of people who die from lung cancer in the US every year do not smoke or use any form of tobacco. In fact, if lung cancer in nonsmokers had a separate category, it would rank among the top 10 fatal cancers in the US.  [from Sruthi Sundar, “Comparing gene expression in smoker and nonsmoker tumor cellss”, 2016 High School GIDAS Research Conference Vol 3, page 16].

Who: Prof. David Beer

David G. Beer is the John and Carla Klein Professor of Thoracic Surgery and a Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Dr. Beer has published over 225 peer-reviewed original research articles and has had a focus on two main research areas, the molecular characterization of genes critical to human esophageal adenocarcinoma development, and the molecular genetics of human lung cancer.  In lung cancer, Dr. Beer has pioneered the use of gene and protein expression profiling for the identification of high-risk early stage lung cancers and has been a working group member for four TCGA projects: lung adenocarcinoma, lung squamous cell carcinoma, gastric carcinoma and esophageal carcinoma all recently published in Nature.
