2021-22 Fundraiser
Every year, the high school students of GIDAS vote on diseases of their choice, and set up projects to raise awareness locally, as well as raise funds for microgrants that research the chosen diseases. If you are interested in getting funding for your own research, please visit this link.
High school students are fundraising for mental illness
It is difficult to get government funding for innovative research due to the lack of supporting data. We provide microgrants so that an innovative researcher can obtain initial data. Your donation will help advance mental illness research by providing much needed funding.
PTSD is a very relevant and prevalent disorder: symptoms are found in 25% of survivors of hospitalization for COVID-19 and are widespread in cases of critical illness, sexual assault, accidents, and abuse. Therefore, it is vital that action is taken fast to improve treatment after trauma.

Sex differences in learning processes that relate addiction to post-traumatic stress disorder
Past observational studies have shown that humans who are likely to develop an addiction are also likely to develop PTSD. This phenomenon has been modeled in studies on male rats, helping us develop treatments for human men. However, the same has not been successfully done for female rats. We hope to rectify this by demonstrating this effect in female rats through a new study, using modified testing methods. This will help us develop treatments for all humans, both male and female.

Role of corticosteroid hormones in development of post-traumatic stress disorder via modulation of hippocampal-dependent episodic memory
It is known that administering stress hormones in traumatic situations can help reduce risk of PTSD, however, the reason for this reduction is currently unknown. The purpose of this study is to identify whether corticosteroids improve episodic memory consolidation, which will later help with improved discrimination of trauma associated stimuli. Our research will improve treatment after trauma and lead to developing other treatments that target PTSD prevention.
